Background
HeyGen is an enterprise generative AI video production startup using customizable virtual humans for businesses in need of videos. The LA startup was founded in November 2020 by ex-Snap software engineer Joshua Xu and former ByteDance product lead Wayne Liang. HeyGen pitches its platform as a way to democratize video production and has scored notable investments and recurring revenue even as the field grows more crowded.
HeyGen recently upgraded its platform to HeyGen 5.0. The technology centers on turning text into a speech delivered by an AI avatar. The virtual humans can be digital twins of real people or customized by the company to fit a desired look. HeyGen also has an “Instant Avatar” tool, which produces avatars using just smartphone footage. The virtual presenters lipsync to match the synthetic voice, which can speak in dozens of languages, and translate a submitted script to localize the video.
HeyGen is about to close a $60 million funding round led by Benchmark, which will raise the startup’s total to $69 million total at a valuation of around $500 million.
HeyGen faces an expanding range of enterprise generative AI video platforms like Synthesia, Colossyan, Soul Machines, and Hour One. The startup stakes a claim for producing more realistic avatars than its rivals thanks to its lip-syncing and making digital twins of real people, as well as voice and language customization.
